Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions we get most often about hydroseeding, excavation, and site prep in New Hampshire.

Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding in Southern NH typically runs $0.08 to $0.20 per square foot depending on slope, terrain access, seed mix selected, and whether site prep is included. A typical quarter-acre lawn area (~10,000 sq ft) runs $800–$2,000 fully installed.

We provide free on-site estimates — square footage, access, and conditions all affect the final number, and we won't quote blind over the phone.

Versus sod: Hydroseeding costs 50–80% less, works on slopes and irregular terrain, and produces deeper root systems since the grass grows in your actual soil from seed.

Versus dry seeding: Hydroseed germinates 4x faster, holds seed and moisture on slopes, and provides built-in starter fertilizer. The mulch layer acts as a protective blanket that dry seeding simply can't replicate.

Best window: Late August through mid-October. Soil stays warm from summer, air temps drop into the ideal germination range (50–65°F), and NH fall rain does most of the watering work for you.

Second best: May through mid-June. Soil has warmed, growth season ahead, but you'll need consistent irrigation through July and August heat.

We do not recommend July–mid-August seeding unless irrigation is guaranteed — heat stress kills germination.

Under good conditions (moisture, temperature above 50°F), germination starts in 5–10 days. You'll see a consistent green cover in 3–4 weeks. A fully established, mow-ready lawn takes 6–8 weeks.

Fall-seeded lawns overwinter in a semi-dormant state and emerge fully in spring — this is normal and produces an excellent lawn.

Water: Light and frequent for the first 3 weeks. 2–3 light waterings per day (10–15 min each) is better than one long soak. Keep the mulch layer moist but not saturated. Never let it fully dry out during germination.

Stay off it: No foot traffic, pets, or vehicle access for at least 6 weeks.

First mow: Wait until grass reaches 3.5–4 inches, then mow to 2.5–3 inches. Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade.

We send written aftercare instructions with every job and are always available to answer questions.

Yes — this is one of hydroseeding's biggest advantages over sod and dry seeding. The fiber mulch and tackifier in our mix bond to the soil surface, holding seed and moisture in place on slopes where dry seed would wash away. For steeper slopes, we may recommend erosion blanket in addition to hydroseed for the first season.

Excavation & Grading

Light excavation covers residential and small commercial work using compact equipment: mini excavators, skid steers, and compact track loaders. Think drainage corrections, utility trenches, foundation perimeter work, lot clearing, driveway prep, and grading on properties up to about an acre.

If a job needs a full-size excavator or involves significant material hauling, we'll tell you upfront and can refer heavy equipment contractors we trust.

Grade determines where water goes. Water that drains toward your foundation causes basement water intrusion, frost heave, and structural damage over time. Water that pools creates mosquito habitat, dead spots, and soggy areas that never dry out. Getting the grade right before seeding means your lawn will thrive; getting it wrong means you'll fight the same problems every year.

Working with Us

Typically 1–2 weeks from estimate approval for residential hydroseeding. Excavation and grading jobs depend on scope. We're transparent about our schedule and won't give you a date we can't keep.

Yes. We carry full general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Certificates are available on request. We're happy to provide documentation before any project starts.

We stand behind our work. If germination is poor due to application error (not weather, drought, or watering neglect), we'll come back and address it. We've built our reputation on doing things right, and we're not interested in leaving a client unhappy.
